Goblin (also known as Guardian: The Lonely and Great God) is a South Korean television series that has achieved international popularity since its release in 2016.
It focuses on Kim Shin (actor Gong Yoo), a military general from the Goryeo Dynasty who is cursed and is an immortal goblin who is willing to end his eternal life by searching for his bride, Ji Eun-Tak (actor Kim Go-Eun), a high school student with ghost ability.
Lee Eung-bok, a well-known Korean director, is known for his masterful storytelling and breath-taking cinematography in his dramas. He has been nominated numerous times as Best Director for his work at Baeksang Arts Awards.
Eung-bok’s well-known Korean dramas also include Descendants of the Sun and The Heirs.
Goblin combines a blend of humour, intense emotions, romance, and fantasy.
The visuals perfectly capture the elegant actors in both historical and contemporary environments.
Lee manages to get these amazing actors to give outstanding performances. Gong Yoo portrays Kim Shin with the depth of loneliness. Bright and strong, Kim Go-eun as Ji Eun-tak is a perfect contrast to Kim Shin’s sorrow.
Lee Dong-wook provides complexity and comedic comfort as one of the Grim Reaper, while Yoo In-na and Yook Sung-Jae strengthen the story in support roles.
The series explores love, loss, and the pursuit of purpose, emphasising the theory that despite fate and destiny, love and human connection give life purpose. The series stands beyond a typical fantasy romance thanks to the combination of magical features which ensures psychological significance.
For those Westerners who are strangers to Korean drama Goblin is a great entry point. Watching it as a first timer shows its unique combination of high-quality of production, deep cultural significance, and emotional depth that characterizes K-dramas.
While many might say that there are better television programs, K-dramas present a unique
and satisfying experience offering a spotlight on Korean culture and values.
