Juliet Naked: The forgotten A Side

By Dominic Mackie

In Nick Hornby’s romantic comedy novel Juliet Naked, we follow the regrets of a forgotten rocker and the obsession that’s built from his career.

Annie finds herself stuck in-between two relationships, one being with her long-term partner Duncan and the other being the obsession Duncan has with long-forgotten singer songwriter Tucker Crowe.

This obsession slowly eats away at Annie, who is longing to become a mother, but Duncan only cares about Crowe’s long-forgotten album Juliet.

When a CD falls through the mailbox titled Juliet Naked, Annie becomes intrigued with knowing something Duncan doesn’t about his beloved Tucker.

The ideas that worked well for the story were the inclusion of musical icons such as Neil Young and the Smiths even though they were brought up briefly; it helps with visualising the character of Tucker Crowe for the reader and particularly a music lover.

The inclusion of deeper and more meaningful topics, such as Annie discussing her desire for children and the realisation that the last 15 years might have been a waste, was a refreshing additive.

This honesty helps the reader connect with the character on a more personal level because they can sympathise with having regrets, no matter the size.

The thing that could be improved in my opinion is the pacing of the ending, even though it was mostly likely intentionally written like that.

It seemed to leave a bit up in the air, or open to interpretation, so you’re never sure if it was a happy ending or not. The reader decides.

Overall, this read was enjoyable, and if you’re a fan of romance, comedy, or music, I’m pretty sure you’ll find it enjoyable as well.
