Rocky relics: Appreciating the art at our feet

By Liam Pointing

Taking a short walk along the coast between Coogee and Clovelly, you see some beautiful views. Out to the ocean, you might even see some whales.

But also, beneath your feet, there is a whole world of wonder. Rock formations – crafted through millions of years of seismic activity, weathering, and other factors – look like a universe within themselves.

It is fascinating to think what they have borne witness to over their lifetime; from a single speck to the mass they are now. What stories they could tell? Who has walked over them?

Most of these are “hard” rock (metamorphic, igneous and sedimentary) and they contain some beautiful hues. Almost looking like a painter weaving their brush over canvas, the idea “life imitates art” comes to mind.
