Across Australia, pub trivia remains a stalwart of weeknight entertainment, but not all trivia nights are created equal.
In my experience, many fall short of expectations: uncharismatic hosts, poorly balanced questions, and a lack of atmosphere.
While I’ve encountered several of these shortcomings at venues around Sydney, Future Brewing in St Peters offers a refreshing exception. Their Wednesday night trivia stands out thanks to its well-pitched questions, friendly host, and delicious beer brewed on site.
Kicking off at 6.30pm and running until 8pm, the trivia is the perfect length for a weeknight, meaning everyone (including kids and dogs) can be home for bedtime.
While the early start time can make it tricky for everyone to get there before the first round, street parking and the short five-minute walk from St Peters Station make getting there relatively easy.
The host, Ryan, is a great MC, keeping the quiz flowing with well-timed comedic diversions while promoting a competitive but relaxed atmosphere.
The questions strike an excellent balance, offering enough challenge to keep things engaging without becoming frustratingly difficult. With a thoughtful mix of topics and difficulty levels, it ensures that everyone has a chance to contribute and stay involved.
Future Brewing offers a good selection of beer that is brewed in the vats sitting in the open warehouse-style venue. A recent favourite of mine has been the rice lager Onigiri, which is easy drinking and refreshing. But if you want something more complex to match the niche questions, they also have ales, stouts and (if you’re particularly brave) a smoothie sour.
The range is unfortunately limited for non-beer drinkers and with no onsite kitchen, the only food on offer is bags of chips. A pizza pop-up called Il Barbuto has recently taken up residency serving delicious Neapolitan Pizza but, unfortunately, what pops up must pop down.
