Atlassian Central, a futuristic 39-level tower being erected next to Central Station terminal, is shaking up green building by using timber to cut carbon and boost sustainability.
The building is a collaboration combining New York-based SHoP Architect’s expertise in innovative materials and tall timber structures with Australian firm BVN’s local knowledge and design approach.
Built Australia is the builder and construction partner.
“There’s nothing conventional about this endeavour,” Built Australia director Stephen Boss said. “It is conceived as a benchmark for modern construction, aiming to minimise environmental impact during both its construction and operation, while pioneering workspaces that prioritise a people-centric approach.”
The building is set to be the world’s tallest hybrid timber tower and will produce 50 per cent less carbon during construction by using a mix of steel and eco-friendly timber.
Once complete, it will run entirely on renewable energy.

The Atlassian Central building is designed for how we work today—remotely, flexibly, and collaboratively. It features a mix of flexible desks, team zones, and quiet areas so people can choose what suits them. Smart tech supports seamless hybrid work, whether in-person or online.
It’s not just about workspaces. There are open-air terraces, wellness zones, green spaces, and communal areas for breaks and casual chats.
The tower will accommodate up to 5000 occupants, including Atlassian, which is set to move in by early 2027.
At street level, Atlassian Central will be a vibrant retail hub with an integrated ground floor and welcoming, accessible arrival experience for workers and the public.
Dexus is the co-developer and investment partner for the tower. It’s working alongside Atlassian to deliver the project as part of the broader Tech Central precinct in Sydney.
The NSW Government has invested over $2.5 billion into the Tech Central precinct, a major initiative to transform the area from Central Station to Camperdown into a world-class innovation hub.
The goal is to attract global tech companies, support local startups, and create over 25,000 innovation jobs.
