Carrying the Oz punk torch

By Sebastian Langdon

Australians have always had a rowdy reputation, and the distorted guitar has often found its way out of our isolated island.

Punk music has thrashed its way into every corner of the world and, even though Australia seems like a land far away, bands like The Saints, Radio Birdman and Hoodoo Gurus have pushed their unique green and gold sound beyond its borders.

But who is keeping the mosh pit jumping now? Well, here are some recent punk bands hailing from the land Down Under.

No.1: Amyl and the Sniffers
Amyl and the Sniffers are a ferocious four-piece band known for their in-your-face gritty sound and extreme live performances. Fronted by the powerhouse Amy Taylor, the group dishes out a potent mix of 80s hardcore and garage influences, matched by fast-paced riffs, raw vocals and rebellious lyrics. Formed in 2016, they have established themselves on the stage with Amyl and the Sniffers (2019) and Comfort to Me (2021) winning an ARIA Award for Best Rock Album. Their unapologetic style and relentless energy have made them a stand-out act on the global punk scene.

No.2: Drunk Mums
The rowdy Melbourne punks are known for their grainy vocals and no-frills approach to rock n roll. With a sound that blends pub rock, punk and a classic rock swagger, they’ve built a reputation for their raving live shows and infectious energy. Albums like Gone Troppo and Urban Cowboy showcase their knack for catchy riffs, raucous vocals, and rebellious spirit that resonates with fans of true blue, unfiltered music.

No.3: The Chats
The Chats are a Queensland-based trio best known for their viral hit Smoko (21 million views) which captures their signature blend of humour, Aussie slang and no-nonsense punk energy. Their music, often described as ‘shed rock’, is fast loud and refreshingly unpretentious, with lyrics that reflect the mundane absurdities of working-class life. The Chats have quickly become a cult favourite, both in Australia and internationally, for their infectious energy and DIY ethos.

No.4: Mini Skirt

Mini Skirt is a punk band from Byron Bay, Australia, recognised for their rough sound and socially conscious lyrics. Their music combines the angst of classic punk with a modern edge, addressing themes of disillusionment and societal issues. Known for their tunes Pretty and Dying Majority, Miniskirt has carved out a place in the Australian punk scene with tracks that are as thought-provoking as they are hard hitting.

No.5: STIFF RICHARDS
With a name that speaks for itself, Stiff Richards is a Melbourne-band celebrated for their explosive energy and classic punk rock sound. Drawing influences from late 70s punk and 80s LA punk, they deliver fast paced aggressive tracks that are both cathartic and exhilarating. With albums like ‘State of Mind’ and ‘DIG’, Stiff Richards have established themselves as a weapon in the Australian underground scene, earning a dedicated following with their relentless approach to rock.

No.6: Dumb Punts
Another Melbourne band, Dumb Punts, embodies the DIY mindset, delivering straightforward, bladed tunes that are all about fun and rebellion. Their sound is a blend of late 80s punk and indie rock with lyrics that capture the carefree, sometimes chaotic lifestyles of youth. With a reputation for entertaining shows and an ever-growing fan base, Dumb Punts are a vital part of Australia vibrant punk community.

The raw rough energy Australia has been known for will always find its way through the music we create with bands like the list above who continue to break the boundaries of the genre.

By staying true to the unfiltered expression that defines punk, they light the fire in the new generations of fellow rockers, ensuring this powerful and vital genre remains fierce and relevant as ever.

Punks from down under are not just keeping the boat afloat, they are propelling it into the new wave with passion and authenticity.
