Media student survival guide

By Mirwais Haidari

Being a media student is exciting, but it can also be stressful.

Tight deadlines, technical challenges and creative pressure can quickly become crushing.

Here are 7 practical ways to survive and succeed at TAFE.

No.1: Plan your deadlines early

Media projects always take longer than you expect, especially editing. Break your task into small steps and set mini deadlines so you don’t end up rushing the night before submission.

No.2: Record more than you need

Always capture extra audio and video. You can delete later, but you can’t re-record easily.

No.3: Make friends in class

Media is a collaborative industry. The people sitting next to you today could become your future colleagues, camera operators or producers.

No.4: Practice editing every week

The more you edit. The faster and better you become.

No.5: Accept feedback calmly

Constructive criticism is part of the media world. Instead of feeling discouraged, use feedback as a tool to improve your storytelling and technical skills.

No.6: Build a small portfolio

Save Your best work. You will need it when applying for jobs.

No.7: Take care of yourself

Lack of sleep and stress can damage your creativity. Eat well, rest properly and take short breaks. Your brain needs energy to produce good ideas.
