We’ve got you covered

By Eric Cao

Since 2004 Triple J have gathered some of the most eclectic artists to do covers live on a segment called Like A Version. There have been some standout performances over the years that simply deserve your attention. From unexpected genre switches to bang-on renditions, here are some of the best.

1: The DMA’s – Believe (Cher)

This band is at the top of Triple J’s Like A Version Hottest 100 for a reason.

In this rendition, Tommy O’Dell’s raspy, wavering vocals accompanied by acoustic guitars introduce an element of vulnerability to Cher’s 90’s pop classic.

2: Cub Sport – Prada (Cassö x Raye x D Block Europe)

What happens when you take a hard dance track and add the aethereal vocal stylings of Tim Nelson? You get this gem from Cub Sport. Tim elevates the piece through his expertly controlled falsetto. His vocal performance is haunting, melancholic and simply mesmerising.

3: Pendulum – Anti-Hero (Taylor Swift)

This band transformed an angsty pop rumination into a rock anthem.

Pendulum certainly ups the tempo, leaning heavily on guitar, drums and lead singer Rob Swire’s belting technique to create a piece that hits hard.

4: Royel Otis – Murder on the Dancefloor (Sophie Ellis-Bextor)

A charming, indie rock rendition of a pop chart topper from 2001.

Royel Otis add their signature flair to the proceedings, throwing drums, guitars and Otis Pavlovic’s whimsical delivery into the mix to make this a fun romp.

5: Peking Duk – Fall At Your Feet featuring Julia Stone (Crowded House)

This rendition gives the Crowded House classic an anthemic quality with the addition of synth beats and vocals from Peking Duk alongside Julia Stone and Dean Brady to build a powerful harmony.
