Over eight years after its initial release, Bandai has released the third instalment to the Little Nightmares series.
Little Nightmares is a video game series initially created by Tarsier Studios, a Swedish developer, with the game published under Bandai Namco Entertainment.
It was initially released in 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and then later on Nintendo Switch and mobile devices.
The video game community has been abuzz with theories, questions, and anticipation to see what became of their favourite characters, the new world map, and gameplay. But with any popular series, expectation to be as good as its predecessor is high.
Now having been released, popular Youtubers such as CoryxKenshin, Jacksepticeye, Markiplier, and fans alike have jumped on the bandwagon to see the results for themselves.
Kayla, a long-time fan of the series, shared her sentiments.
“I and many other fans found the latest instalment in the Little Nightmares series to be rather flawed compared to its predecessors,” said Kayla.
“While it does have stunning backgrounds and visuals, incredibly immersive sound design, and several new and exciting game mechanics between the two new protagonists that are introduced – it falls short when it comes to providing aspects such as clear and thematic storytelling, as well as expansive and atmospheric worldbuilding.”
The expectations of fans for this one hasn’t been met to the standard that they were hoping for.
Steam, the world’s largest online platform for the digital distribution of PC gaming, and a social hub for the gaming community, has ranked Little Nightmares 3 with a sour 49 per cent positive review. That compares to the beloved original which stands strong with a 94 per cent positive review.
The criticisms against the new release has predominantly been found in its storytelling, which was the very aspect that brought the Little Nightmares fans to love the series to begin with.
However, the love for the game hasn’t completely dwindled in their hearts as they look forward to what Bandai has planned next.
“I think that it was overall a positive gaming experience,” Kayla said. “I enjoyed the new characters and their story, and have a continued investment in any upcoming and future releases.”
