Transport NSW has retired a beloved member of Sydney’s railways after 55 years of service, making way for the more modern Mariyung Fleet.
Operating from Central Station, located in Sydney’s CBD, the V Set train would journey as far as Lithgow and Newcastle. Its final service took place on the 30th of January, 2026, making its last run on the intercity Blue Mountains Line.
Features include charging outlets within the seats, two-by-two seating, more surveillance, and table trays. While the modern and safety focused updates create a more inclusive and productive change, including artist representation in the seat pattern.
The Mariyung Fleet has, however, ruffled some feathers in the Intercity transport community. A large percentage of commuters mourned the loss of the reversable train seats. A classic and convenient feature.
The V set will be retired to be displayed in a rail heritage museum for future generations to experience the beloved rail piece and its authentic, unique design, which satisfied the transport needs of intercity commuters for 55 years.
Minister for Regional transport Jenny Aitchison, said: “Millions of train passengers use the Central Coast and Newcastle line every year and now they can regularly enjoy a more comfortable, safe and accessible service.
“While I understand many train buffs will be sad to see the old V Set carriages go, our community has waited patiently for the new
Mariyung Fleet and all the comforts they provide.”
