Aussie blockbuster hits theatres

By Amari Leiva-Urzua

Sydney’s State Theatre welcomed local actors and Hollywood big shots Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt, and David Leitch for The Fall Guy premiere in early April.

The film began production in 2022 right here in the Sydney CBD. In 2023, film production led to the Harbour Bridge and surrounding city streets being closed for seven hours, with exclusive images capturing Gosling doing his own stunts.

Now it has all come to a close and is making its way to theatres on April 24th.

The Fall Guy takes viewers into the world of stunt professionals, following the comedic romance between stunt double Colt Seavers (Gosling) and director Jody Morena (Blunt).

The film is an adaptation of the 1980s TV show about a stuntman whose side hustle is bounty hunting. Following a similar plot, the charismatic, wisecracking Seavers is called to perform the stunts for Hollywood sensation Tom Ryder.

When Ryder goes missing, Colt is thrown from the set into real-life crime and action to find him. At the same time, he must navigate a romantic relationship with his beautiful ex-girlfriend Moreno.

Playing on the tropes of a classic action rom-com, The Fall Guy does not fail to excite. It has received praise for its clever comedy, satire and multiple in-jokes and references to the stunt industry in filmmaking.

The Vulture entertainment magazine claims the film is “a funny, romantic, stunt-filled delight”.

Nevertheless, particular attention has been cast on to the leading man with cultural magazines all over the internet asking “is there anything Gosling can’t do?”.

After showing off his comedic side in the iconic Barbie movie, he now continues to add some flair with Empire magazine saying that Gosling’s Fall Guy role has “the goofiness of The Nice Guys, the cool of Drive, and the romance of The Notebook”.

Gosling, however, is not the only one to shine with international stars Blunt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Winston Duke and Hannah Waddingham also bringing the film to life.

On the Aussie side of things, get ready to see actress Teresa Palmer as well as local actors Ben Knight, Matuse, Adam Dunn, Zara Michaels and Loane Sa’ula.

So grab your popcorn and make sure to check out the true-blue blockbuster in theatres starting this week.
