Countdown: TAFE’s musical Top 10

By Cleo Gaona and Emily Aus

We asked our students at TAFE Ultimo to send us their favourite music genre and the results are in.

10: Country
Coming in last place, it seems not even Beyonce can make our students here at Ultimo enjoy some country swing with their studies. Despite its storytelling charm and catchy melodies, it has not hit the mainstream at TAFE Ultimo.

9: Reggae
Considering the recent release of “One Love” the Bob Marley movie, it seems few TAFE students enjoy jamming until the break of day as it sits under the popularity radar here at Ultimo.

8: Latin/reggaeton
With Latin music coming in No.8, it seems TAFE students may be lacking a little caliente flavour in their playlists.

7: Taylor Swift
At TAFE Ultimo, Taylor Swift has established her own space with the students thanks to the excitement of the most recent Eras tour. But it does not appear that there are as many passionate Swifties on campus as one might think.

6: Jazz
Ya like jazz? According to our results, a lot of our students do enjoy the swing and smooth funk of jazz which works as a smooth, heartfelt background for many study sessions and free times. It is a favourite among people with discriminating ears because of its ageless appeal and improvised style.

5: RnB
Fifth place goes to rhythm and blues, which won over the hearts of many TAFE Ultimo students with its attractive tunes and significant lyrics. R&B music, whether it be contemporary hits or timeless classics, keeps the school spirit bright.

4: Classical
It’s quite a surprise that such an old-fashioned genre has made it to the top four most-enjoyed musical genres at TAFE. Our student body is still attracted to the eternal works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach, which are well known for promoting calmness and concentration.

3: A tie between Pop and Hip Hop/Rap
At No.3, pop and hip-hop/rap take centre stage, showing the wide range of musical tastes among our campus community. With their mix of hard-hitting rap verses and chart-topping pop hits, this dynamic duo has something to offer everyone.

2: Indie
Those looking for something outside the mainstream are drawn to indie music’s colourful sounds and alternative vibes. The DIY attitude and experimental sounds provide a welcome contrast to popular music trends.

1: Rock
Surprisingly, among students at TAFE Ultimo, rock music emerges as the clear favourite. According to a survey, almost 50 per cent of students voted for rock music. This shows that the classic appeal of guitars, drums, and an uncontrollable attitude is still strong among the students. This genre electrifies our campus with everything from contemporary rock hits to timeless anthems. Rock on!
