Music unites Manly locals

By Mirwais Haidari

On a sunny afternoon near Manly Beach, the sound of bagpipes and drums attracts the attention of people walking past.

The musicians are members of the Manly Warringah Pipe Band, a local community group that often performs at public events and busy places around the area. Dressed in traditional Scottish kilts and uniforms, the band plays upbeat music for the crowd.

In front of the musicians, a dancer in a bright dress performs to the rhythm of the music. Her energetic movements bring extra excitement to the performance and quickly draw more people to stop and watch. Families, tourists and beach visitors gather around the group. Some take photos while others clap along to the music.

A sign placed in front of the band explains that the group is self-funded. Donations collected during performances help support the band and allow members to take part in international events such as the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

For many people passing by, the performance becomes a pleasant surprise during a normal day near the beach, showing how music can bring people together in a shared public space.
