Eat cake: Advice to a younger me

By Jay Galolo

Thirty-six. That is how old I turned this year.

I often find I’m reflecting on life when my birthday is near, like we suddenly focus more on the time that has passed rather than the time ahead, but there’s a few things I’d tell my younger self.

You will more than likely change career paths at least once, or like me do a 360 loop – I’ve gone from studying a Diploma of Public Relations to now undertaking a Screen & Media Certificate IV in Social Media.

Travel and experience life, you aren’t going to marry your high school sweetheart. Well you might, but statistics show most people divorce before the age of 30 so I have successfully survived my first divorce!

Don’t get a credit card and if you do, at least get one with a good rewards system. I still feel kind of sad knowing I’ve potentially missed out on a few free flights.

Also, don’t listen to advice from anyone whose life you wouldn’t want to live.

SPOILER : You probably shouldn’t listen to me.

Just know you don’t have to have it all figured out. I sure don’t. So let’s not focus on our age and just celebrate life. Who said you can’t have your cake and eat it.
