Going global: 10 tantalising foods

You can travel the world without leaving home just by trying foods from different cultures. So here are 10 interesting dishes from around the globe that you may not have tried or even heard of yet.

1: Scotland

Haggis is a traditional Scottish dish which is made using the liver, heart, and lungs of a sheep. It is also mixed with minced beef or mutton suet, oatmeal and then seasoned with onion, cayenne pepper, and other spices.

2: Iceland

Hákarl is an Icelandic dish that has been around as far back as the Viking age. The fermented shark that makes this dish is often served with a shot of Brennivín liquor. The drink helps to wash down the aroma that comes from the shark meat..

3: Lebanon

Kafta is traditional for people of Lebanese descent. It’s made with beef or lamb soaked in seasonings and is usually served on a wooden skewer with onions to add crunch and flavour. It is then served with garlic for extra punch.

4: Peru

Ceviche is a traditional Peruvian dish which consists of fish marinated in fresh lime juice. It is then served with thinly sliced red onion and sweet potato.

5: Romania

Sarmale is a Romanian dish which consists of boiled sour cabbage rolls which are filled with minced meat, rice and spices. They are often served with a side of sour cream.

6: Japan

Miso soup is a famous Japanese dish which is made from miso paste and dashi stock. Once these two ingredients are combined the soup will be served with tofu and green onions.

7: Greece

Gyros is a dish that is commonly known among the Greek community. It contains a roasted meat, tomato, onion and tzatziki inside some pita bread. The meat is cut very finely off a vertical skewer where it has been cooking..

8: Samoa

Samoan chop-suey is a stir fry with noodles that consists of meat such as chicken, beef or fish. It is then cooked quickly with cabbage, beans or celery and then drenched in a thick starch sauce to make it softer.

9: Spain

Paella is a Spanish dish that consists of rice, saffron, peas, onion, garlic, tomato, capsicum and many more ingredients. It is a famous dish and has been around for a very long time, originating on the Mediterranean coast of Spain.

10: Mexico

Mole is an authentic Mexican dish which is rich in flavour. Its main ingredients are chicken broth, chilis, peanuts and dark chocolate. It isn’t as popular as some other Mexican dishes however it certainly tastes just as good if not better.
