My speed friending experience

By Emily Aus

TAFE Ultimo Campus offers many student services and events, making it a perfect place to spend breaks between classes. With facilities such as the library, disability services, student counselling, tech support and travel concessions, students can find a welcoming and engaging environment at TAFE.

One special event was a Speed Friending session that my friend and I attended during lunchtime.

We arrived at the library after leaving class early. Not coming to the library often, the large group of students waiting to check in helped my courage. The library was filled with excitement as it was soon to begin.

After completing the registration form we joined the other participants, surprised by the number of people. The hosts provided a warm introduction, explaining the idea of speed friending – aiming to make fast friendships through engaging activities.

First up was an icebreaker activity, easing the tension and encouraging interactions. Students played a Would You Rather? game, moving to opposite sides of the room based on their answers. Questions like “sweet or salty?” and “winter or summer?” helped create a welcoming atmosphere and break the nervousness.

The main activity involved forming two large circles, one inside the other, and rotating around to meet new people. Each interaction had a specific topic or question to talk about with your partner. By the end of the hour, each participant had interacted with many students from different courses and streams.

With the main activities finished, the organisers provided a snack break, offering tea and a variety of pastries and cakes. This made it a relaxed environment, generating further discussion and bonding among students.

Speed Friending was an unforgettable first event to attend. Providing more than just a break from studying, it created a sense of belonging and community, with organisers welcoming nervous participants with warm smiles.

We left the library having accomplished our goals, meeting and making new friends via a process that was enjoyable and effective for students.
