Hamilton Down Under

By Jessica Columbus

The musical about Alexander Hamilton, the American Founding Father on the $10 bill, that has taken the world by storm has returned to Sydney’s Lyric Theatre, ready to immerse Australian audiences in its groundbreaking storytelling and soundtrack.

Written and produced by renowned playwright and performer Lin Manuel Miranda, the musical Hamilton is set to take the stage in the Sydney Lyric Theatre until January 5, 2025.

Originally premiering on Broadway in 2015, the Sydney production of Hamilton promises to bring the same intensity and passion that won fans over globally, and in the Broadway and West End productions.

Set against the backdrop of the American Revolution, detailing the life of Hamilton, the musical is a fresh and bold new take on a well-versed area of history which blends traditional musical fanfare and traditional show tunes with modern and daring elements of hip-hop.

Hamilton is sure to both entertain and educate Aussie theatregoers.

Much like both the Broadway and the West End productions, Hamilton Sydney’s cast is a multicultural one, reflecting the core philosophy of the musical; that America is a story for everyone. The cast has been meticulously selected to carry the dynamic and passionate energy of its previous renditions.

Beyond the musical’s revolutionary casting, Hamilton has become a cultural phenomenon for Lin Manuel Miranda’s rapid-fire lyrics.

The blend of modern hip-hop and R&B with traditional Broadway-style musicality serves as both a narrative tool and a display of sheer linguistic prowess. The genre-defying writing keeps theatregoers on the edge of their seats the whole time.

As Hamilton makes its mark Down Under at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre, theatre enthusiasts and newcomers alike can expect to be enthralled by a musical with a bold soundtrack, cast and story.
