Send Help: Office politics gets bloody

By Joanne Esposito

Imagine being stranded on a deserted island with the boss who never appreciated you, only to discover you’re now calling the shots.

I was invited to a black comedy screening, expecting an easy night at the movies. I knew nothing about the film, not even the title. Before long I was wondering whether I needed to send help myself.

The film Send Help introduces us to Linda Liddle (Rachel McAdams), an overlooked employee judged on her tired appearance and unfashionable style. After missing out on a promotion and daring to question her arrogant CEO, Bradley Preston (Dylan O’Brien), she joins him and his team on a business trip that ends in a plane crash.

The only survivors, Linda and Bradley find themselves stranded on what appears to be a deserted island. Suddenly, office politics takes on a whole new meaning and the boss who once dismissed Linda must rely on her to survive. Talk about a career change.

A secret from Linda’s past hints that she’s not the quiet, obedient employee everyone assumed she was. And as the power shifts Bradley must swallow his ego, while Linda reveals a clever, resourceful and surprisingly dangerous side that keeps you guessing.

For the first time Linda is in complete control. What follows is a psychological power game packed with twists and turns. You’ll jump with suspense, burst into laughter and wonder whether Linda is a survivor or a villain. Your mind will boggle.

McAdams is fantastic, balancing awkward charm with a darker edge, while O’Brien is equally entertaining as the boss who suddenly finds himself at her mercy. Their changing relationship delivers plenty of tension and laughs.

“No one is going to save you, so you have to save yourself,” declares Linda.

But did the island change Linda, or simply free her to reveal who she really is?

Directed by Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead, Drag Me to Hell), the film delivers suspense, jump scares and mind-blowing dark humour. I certainly jumped in my seat a few times.

Beneath the blood and comedy, Send Help takes a swipe at toxic workplace culture and the dangers of underestimating people.

It’s not for the faint-hearted, but if you enjoy dark humour, shocking twists and bloody revenge, this survival story is well worth watching.
