SXSW Spotlight: Jorja Smith

By Beattie Tow

Jorja Smith brought a bit of London’s Soho to Sydney with her falling or flying (2023) Australian tour. Playing at the ICC Sydney Theatre on Tuesday, October 15, Smith significantly sweetened the SXSW Sydney line-up.

Although Smith may not be as mainstream compared to some pop artists, it’s clear she has been amassing an impassioned fan base since the release of her debut album, Lost & Found (2018). If you haven’t already heard her name, you’ve definitely heard her biggest hits, including the viral Little Things x Gypsy Woman mash-up.

Both a Grammy and Brits-nominated artist, Smith’s blended sound has been defined as RnB, Afrobeat and pop.

Her full band includes two drummers, highlighting the importance of the rhythm and beat. The tempo and percussion of her band alongside her soulful voice is key to Smith’s unique sound.

Smith’s voice could be compared to the likes of Amy Winehouse and Raye, a distinctly British tone that is smooth and gritty at the same time.

She showcased her dynamic range with both her low and deep tone and soaring harmonies, highlighting the theme of her album falling or flying, being the highs and lows of life.

As a new listener the vocal mix made the lyrics difficult to decipher. However this didn’t subtract from the performance, as the sound as a whole is what sets Smith apart.

This Grammy-nominated artist drew in a sea of faux fur, leopard print and knee-high boots – perhaps the coolest crowd this business-district venue has seen. Built in 2016, the ICC Sydney Theatre is finally finding its place in Sydney’s nightlife and music culture after years of lockdowns.

Australia’s rising star: Beckah Amani

Opening for Smith was the Queensland-born Beckah Amani, showcasing her hit singles, including the popular Free Fall (2024), and her debut album April (2022).

The Australian talent was completely at ease in front of a huge crowd. Amani excelled at both hyping the crowd up and drawing them in for intimate moments with her heart-breaking and soulful voice.

Her dynamic range was on full display as she slid between deeply personal and emotion-evoking songs to warm beats that had the crowd moving. Spotlight (2022) was among the standout songs, with her personal reflections on being a black woman in Australia clearly captivating the audience.

Amani was spotlighted as an up-and-coming artist when she was awarded triple j’s Unearthed Emerging Artist of the Year in 2021.

For now, you’re most likely to catch Amani on FBi Radio or triple j. By the way Amani was able to expertly command the venue, you can expect to be hearing more of her.
