Nirvana in Fire breaks internet

By Tian Li

Nirvana in Fire is a Chinese history, wuxia (martial arts and chivalry) and political drama that first aired in 2015. It quickly earned the highest praise among social media platforms and remains widely regarded as one of the best of the genre.

The series was based on the popular 2007 internet novel Lang Ya Bang by Hai Yan, often referred to as the Chinese version of The Count of Monte Cristo.

Nirvana in Fire is considered a social media phenomenon, generating 3.55 billion posts on Sina Weibo that praised its characters and storyline. As of December 2016, it has a total of 13 billion views.

Unique historical setting and beautiful costumes
Set in an alternate history of the Da Liang Dynasty (the six century), Nirvana in Fire offers a richly imagined world filled with intricate plots and stunning costume design. The storyline is complex and engaging with dramatic twists and powerful dialogue.

Rich, complex political plot
Drawing inspiration from China’s feudal history, the series presents a compelling narrative of intense rivalry and revenge. It resonates with those familiar with Chinese history while captivating newcomers. The sharp, meaningful dialogue embodies traditional Chinese wisdom, making the storytelling both intricate and sophisticated. The depth sets Nirvana in Fire apart from other dramas, offering a unique narrative experience.

Impressive martial arts
The series also stands out for its impressive wuxia sequences, combining martial arts with a level of fantasy. Fans of Chinese Kong Fu will appreciate the expertly choreographed fight scenes, which add a layer of excitement and energy to the series.

Outstanding cast
The acting is exceptional, led by Hu Ge as Mei Chang Su (also known as Lin Shu). His portrayal of a brilliant strategist on a path of carefully planned revenge is mesmerising. Hu Ge is regarded as one of China’s top actors, and the supporting cast – comprising over 100 characters – brings depth and vitality to the story. With numerous characters introduced in the first few episodes, rewatching early episodes might help viewers keep track of the evolving storyline.

Fabulous music and songs
The soundtrack is another standout feature and an essential part of the show’s success. It combines traditional Chinese instruments like the pipa and guzheng with modern orchestral arrangements, creating a rich and atmospheric soundscape. The music elevates the historical setting, while also enriching the storytelling with emotional resonance and cultural depth.

The lyrics of the songs are deeply rooted in traditional Chinese poetic styles, often using metaphors related to nature, time, and fate. They reflect the themes of loyalty, betrayal, love, and the tragic consequences of war and political manipulation.

Hu Ge performs the theme song When Wind Blows. The song’s lyrics reflect his character Mei Changsu’s journey. After surviving the Meilin massacre, Lin Shu changes his identity to Mei Changsu and rises to become the chief of the Jiangzuo Alliance. Twelve years later, he returns to the capital with a secret plan for revenge.

Liu Tao, who plays Princess Mu Nihuang, sings Aging of Beauty. The song’s lyrics mirror Nihuang’s story. The princess is a general for the Mu army and defends the southern border for the Emperor of Da Liang. Her exceptional martial skills won her place on the renowned Langya List of Martial Artists. She was betrothed to Lin Shu, the young marshal of the Chiyan Army, but after the Meilin massacre he was presumed dead.

Nirvana in Fire is a masterpiece, excelling in every aspect: acting, visuals, costumes, plot, settings, chemistry, cinematography, colour palette, and dialogue. The series rightfully deserves its widespread acclaim and numerous awards. For anyone interested in Chinese history, martial arts, and costume dramas, this is a must-watch.

The only downside for international release is the English dub. It is rather monotonous and does not effectively capture the unique traits of each main character, although the English subtitles are available.
