Daria has a special place among television classics because it was a TV show that not only delighted viewers but also struck an emotional connection with them, making an impact on popular culture.
Created by Glenn Eichler and Susie Lewis Lynn, it aired from March 3, 1997, to January 21, 2002, on MTV.
Daria Morgendorffer, voiced by Tracy Grandstaff, is an intelligent, clever high school student dealing with the difficulties of puberty in a fictional town, Lawndale.
Chloe Aus is a long-time fan of the show
“It’s about the titular character, Daria, and her life in high school as well as her life with family and friends,” said Chloe.
“I really enjoyed watching it and sometimes rewatch.”
The series features humour and likeable characters.
“Daria had the most impact as she was the main character,” Chloe said.
“She represents the pessimistic and more realistic personality of a girl growing into a woman, rather than showing the cutesy fun side of girlhood.”
Daria addresses subjects like growing up, bullying, and societal expectation.
“It touches on a lot of issues that are still quite relevant today,” Chloe said. “I believe the show should be watched by more girls.”
For Chloe, viewing Daria brings her comfort and sentimentality in addition to laughter.
“Every time I watch the show, it always makes me feel relaxed and somewhat comfortable.”
When Chloe considers how Daria has affected her life, she admits that it has had a big impact.
“This show played a part in shaping the personality I have now,” she said. “A lot of the quotes and storylines left a big impression on me growing up.”
Chloe admits that even though Daria has a particular place in her heart, she could not watch it non-stop for the rest of her life.
“While I could rewatch it numerous times, I don’t think I could keep watching the same show for the rest of my life.”
Daria’s impact and influence are as strong ever, keeping its status as a cultural phenomenon, as fans like Chloe keep coming back and new viewers find its timeless appeal.
