Two men were left in a serious but stable condition after a wall collapsed in inner-city Sydney around 11am on Monday morning.
The horrific scene took place on Wattle Street, Ultimo, with a wall collapsing on to vehicles parked in the neighbouring Reddy Express service station. The service station was closed as a precaution, and its employees evacuated.
One of men sustained a leg injury and the other injured his neck, a spokesperson for the emergency service told AAP. One patient was transported to St Vincent’s Hospital and the other to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
Five people caught up in the collapse were assessed by NSW Ambulance personnel but released without injury.
“A portion of that building has collapsed, and some of the debris has come down and fallen on some cars parked within the service station area,” Fire and Rescue NSW Acting Superintendent Peter Murray said.
The men in their 60s were removed and transported to hospital by NSW Ambulance. Workers from the collapsed building site and adjacent buildings were also asked to evacuate as a precaution.
Specialist FRNSW Urban Search and Rescue firefighters were on scene while crews assessed the building for signs of further structural collapse with help from a FRNSW drone.
“SafeWork NSW inspectors including specialist engineers and demolition experts are attending the site in response and have commenced enquiries into the incident,” a SafeWork NSW spokesman said.
The building is currently in the process of being demolished and turned into an apartment block.
People are encouraged to avoid the area.
